The BBC streamed 5.3m programmes to Apple devices in July, according to statistics released by the broadcaster.
Web developer Ben Griffiths obtained the statisitcs following a freedom of information request, which revealed that an average of 230,016 Apple mobile device users accessed the BBC iPlayer each week during July.
The statistics also revealed the number of programmes streamed to phones using Google’s Android operating system was much lower, at just 6,400.
The BBC began streaming programmes to Android devices from 23 June but this service is only compatible with handsets using version 2.2 of the operating system, which excludes the vast majority of Android users.
“For complete weeks since 23 June, the average number of Android device users accessing programmes from the BBC iPlayer was 1,106 a week, peaking at 1,896 in the week commencing 26 July,” said the BBC. “In July, 1,026 hours of programming were streamed from the BBC iPlayer to Android devices.”
