Mobile network operator 3 has launched a new handset that lets users make free Internet calls using Skype.
The handset, called the 3 Skypephone, can make paid-for calls over the 3 network and free internet calls and instant messages to other Skype users.

The phone also functions as a camera, an mp3 player, a mobile TV and offers internet access.
Although other mobile phone handsets are already able to make free calls over the internet, this is the first handset tailor-made for Skype calls.

The Skypephone launches in the UK on Friday priced at £49.99 on a pay-as-you-go tariff or free with contracts.

Skype will earn money from the new phone via a revenue-sharing deal with 3.

Skype chief executive Michael van Swaaij said: “Skype began by offering free PC to PC calling and now we’re doing the same with mobile calls with 3. Thanks to 3, Skype has now taken a giant step forward in the mobile arena. It takes an innovative operator like 3 to challenge traditional thinking and offer the kind of product other operators are still shying away from.”
